Amazon Kindle finally available outside of continental US

Remember my article, Why the Chinese have come up with their own Kindle, a while back? Well, guess the pressure's on and, finally, Amazon has come to its senses and announced yesterday that its Kindle will be available for over 100 countries outside of the US.

According to its press release, "now for the first time, Kindle is available to customers around the world. Kindle wirelessly downloads books, magazines, newspapers and personal documents to a crisp, high-resolution 6-inch electronic ink display that looks and reads like real paper. Kindle utilizes the same 3G wireless technology as advanced cell phones, so you never need to hunt for a Wi-Fi hotspot. Readers around the world can preorder Kindle today for US$279 at www.amazon.com/kindle and it will begin shipping October 19".

For those interested in getting the Kindle, hop over to the Amazon Kindle Shop and check out the information specific to our home country. For me, the information reads:

"We are excited to now ship Kindle to Hong Kong. Customers in Hong Kong will enjoy:

Books in under 60 seconds: Think of a book and you could be reading it in under a minute
Free wireless: Free 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle. No monthly fees, service plans, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. For non-US customers, there are also no additional charges for wireless delivery outside your home country. See Coverage Map. See Wireless Terms and Conditions
Large selection: Over 290,000 English language books to choose from, plus US and international newspapers and magazines
Low book prices: New York Times bestsellers and new releases are US$11.99, unless marked otherwise. You'll also find many books for less--over 100,000 titles are priced under US$5.99"

The best thing is Amazon even has the 3G or EDGE/GPRS coverage map of all available countries up (click the "See Coverage Map" from above).

This afternoon, I also received an email from TEXT100 HKG, one of the top PR firms in Hong Kong, that Charlie Tritschler, director of Kindle, will be in Hong Kong on Thursday, October 15, and will be doing a media briefing which I will be attending, of course.

P.S. While writing this blog post, I actually ordered one. Probably gonna have it before Halloween. I'm psyched.
