iPhone 3GS launched in Hong Kong, rates announced

3 Hong Kong has finally announced details on the new iPhone 3GS, which is going on sale tomorrow (July 10, 2009) at its major retail outlets. For details of the contract rates, please refer to the following chart (all rates in HK$, for conversion to US$, divide the HK$ by 7.8).

Prepayment will be an upfront charge, deductible on a 24-month basis (against the monthly fee).

As predicted in my previous post in June, The real deal with iPhone 3GS, the so-called upgrade plan came as no surprise, "ripoff" was the first and only word that came to my mind.

For existing iPhone 3G users with 3HK, the upgrade plan calls for HK$3,580 (US$459) prepayment for the 16GB version and HK$1,100 rebate over a 12-month period.  On top of that, the current contract has to be extended for a further 12 months. Net payment minus rebate = HK$2,480 (US$318). As for the 32GB version, the prepayment is HK$4,360 (US$559), others remain the same. Net price = HK$3,260 (US$418).

So what's a better deal? Getting a new contract or opting for the upgrade plan? Well, you tell me.

If memory serves me right, the old 16GB iPhone 3G was around $6200. Now you can get a 3GS with double the memory for the same price. Not bad.
