Chinese iPhone has no 3G or Wi-Fi

Interesting read over at Gizmodo. The new iPhone will be available in China soon and be carried by China Mobile. BUT without 3G or Wi-Fi. Hmm... for 3G, I can understand due to the fact that China Mobile does not have the 3G network in place and the fact that there's no one unified 3G network throughout the Mainlan. But no Wi-Fi? What were they thinking?
Given that if this rumor (original source from South China Morning Post) is true, the scaled-down iPhone would probably shut down those functions via software tweaking and probably be cracked by the first week.

It's very likely China Unicom will be the carrier for the iPhone 3G and not China Mobile. Think it'll be a full version as well.

Apple's iPhone 3G may ship without 3G and Wi-Fi support in China if China Mobile gets its way. Apparently the cell carrier wants to sell the combination iPod and smartphone in a stripped down version to comply with Chinese regulations, according to cellular-news.So far, 3G support in China is limited, but removing the ability to take advantage of the technology once it rolls out diminishes the value of the iPhone 3G as an Internet-ready device -- as does removing support for Wi-Fi networks.While Apple has agreed to offer an unlocked version of the iPhone in markets where it is required to do so by law, the company so far hasn't agreed to change the components in the device for any market or cell carrier. Apple also isn't likely pleased with the prospect of shipping a hobbled version of its iPhone 3G that can't even use Wi-Networks.

omGG its surprising to hear that china does not have a 3G service network. are they really so backward? They have hosted the olympics and many big events. It is time they do some real catching up. Rather than cheat their way through to earn money.

@kevin18:
China is in the process of developing their own 3G standard, TD-SCDMA, unlike Singapore who's basically copying someone else's system and calling it their own. To answer your question then, China is not backward but Singapore is.
