Bizarre green methods
Nov 9, 2009 18:02How far would you go to save water and electricity? A week ago, I posted on my Facebook Wall about these washable and reusable sanitary napkins. When I showed them to my maid, she was surprised that Malaysians would employ such things as these are what the people in her village use because they are too poor to buy disposable ones.
Today, I saw on Treehugger another bizarre idea--a homemade bicycle-powered washing machine.

What do you think? Is this a fab idea to encourage men to help with the laundry? It's certainly not something I would consider making. I think I would rather handwash my laundry!

I may not speak for all men, but I don't think that's encouraging me to do the laundry. And probably my clothes would agree with there.

Did you say a man do the laundry? I'm not sure I'm ready for such radical thought and I'm not sure I'm ready for a woman who uses reusable napkins. I'm also not ready to take only one shower a day.....I do however try not to waste water unnecessarily. I turn off the air cons when no one is at home and I have become aware of the need to conserve for the next generation. I don't think it's time to go "radical" by asking my maids to change habits in regards to hygenic cleaning practices and clean clothes.

Went to sleep last night thinking about this. I don't think personal hygiene including washed clothes should ever be reduced to conserve water.....I do think technology should be used to recycle home waste water. Most readers here live in warm to very hot countries so there isn't any reasonable alternative to taking several showers per day. Most readers here also come from countries who could employ better water recycling (if our taxes would stop ending up in private bank accounts in Europe.
