Email accounts for people who don't have access to computers
Sep 16, 2009 15:06Last December, Nokia launched Ovi Mail, an email service for people who don't have access to a computer but have access to a mobile phone. My initial thought was, why email then? If all you have is a mobile phone, why not just SMS? After all, data is still overpriced. I had forgotten that you can do a lot more via email, like write longer messages, send file attachments, include the formality of a signature, etc.
My second thought was, if one does not have access to computers, will one value the ability to email? Who will the person email to anyway? I've come to realize that the ability to email does matter. Foreign workers can better communicate with their families back home, for example, and continue building the bond they have established with those who are far but dear.
Six months after launching Ovi Mail, it has generated some interest--over 1 million Ovi Mail accounts have been activated, mostly from India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa.
More people need to know about Ovi Mail, I feel.

You can sign up and use Ovi Mail with a simple Nokia phone such as the 2330 classic, pictured above.
