The purpose of digital photography

Ask anyone who owns a digital camera why he bought it and he will likely say: "I want to capture images of my children before they grow up", or "I want to snap the beautiful places I've traveled to to show my family and friends", or something along those lines.

But a photo can more than simply freeze a moment in time. The split second of a moment can tell a moving story that helps strangers empathize and connect. I was inspired by David Griffin's presentation at TED.com. David is the director of photography for the National Geographic, and he is the man who selects some of the most powerful storytelling images for publication in the magazine.

I now see how else my amateur photography can move forward. It's not just about angles, exposure, ISO and shutter speed. It's also about the story that can be told in a single picture past all borders and barriers.

why are there portraiture or paintings in the past? that even Leonardo-da-Vinci attempted a close-replica(with perceived accuracy) in his works be it drawing or sculpture, that maybe close to the accuracy in digital photography. but along with technological advances, aside from reproducing that captured moment in a digital format, the cameras of today offers powerful features that are available on SLRs before that create (more)excitement in photography..certainly 'a picture paints a thousand words'

btw, you might be interested as well how an obsessed person like Adam-Savage(mythbusters) have tried to re-create the 'Maltese Falcon' himself, link-www.gizmodo.com.au...
