A Louis Vuitton bag vs, a rice paper bag: Which would you rather have?

Which would you rather have? A bag made of soft, supple leather by Louis Vuitton?

Or a bag made of recycled rice paper and brown paper by Keen Footwear?

Don't worry, I am not going to crucify you if you were to choose the less environmentally friendly LV. As much as I hope luxury goods designers will create sustainable products, I also hope that sustainable goods designers will create prettier things.

Whatever you choose for now, at the very least, check that it is durable and that you wouldn't mind using it for longer than a few months. Why damage the environment over and over by getting a brand new one every few months? Similarly, I've blogged before that I'm not a fan of the 3G iPhone as it's not known to be eco-friendly. But I know lots of people who are still going to get one. At the very least, get an iPhone case to protect it so you may use it for longer.

The link I've provided is for one ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD which is a virtually indestructible film that will protect the iPhone 3G from unsightly scratches. It is a longer-lasting alternative to the usual iPhone cases and screen protectors.

I'd have to say that buying the Louis Vuitton bag IS the more environmentally friendly choice. Choosing the more traditional, and made to last option not only makes this the greener option, but when you buy the Louis Vuitton, you're buying an item with inherent (and resale) value. This encourages not only the original purchase, but the subsequent re-use of that item as it's sold on the secondary market. Recycling takes time, resources and energy to accomplish- Re-use is more environmentally friendly! :) Sarah Davis www.fashionphile.com
