ASUS' cheap tactic

How naughty of ASUS! While I was up in the mountains without any way of knowing what was going on in the tech world, ASUS came to Taiwan for CeBIT 2008 and unveiled its latest concept line of green computing.

Huh, did ASUS think it could escape my scrutiny? According to the information on the ASUS Web site, this range of computers comply with RoHS regulations Directive 2002/95/EC (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment), and utilize substituted materials for various heavy metals to help curb environmental pollution.

Personally, what I like about this range is that it is made of bamboo instead of plastic. Being a touchy-feely person, I know I will enjoy the warmth of soft bamboo wood under the palm of my hand instead of cold fish-like plastic.

To demonstrate, here's photographic evidence of my hand enjoying the texture of ancient unpolished wood in the village of XiDi just a few days ago.

Mmm, that feels good.

What I do not prefer about this range is how it tries to link itself with superior spirituality. Quote from the ASUS Web site:

In nature, bamboo carries a touch of spiritual warmth with its unique tactile surface and its refreshing fragrance. In the Chinese culture, this unique character symbolizes a serene wisdom that takes the soul through a journey of aesthetic realms.

I shan't comment further on this.

Other than that small bit, I praise ASUS for taking the trouble to green its upcoming range. ASUS, I'm thankful you're taking steps to care for us instead of sitting on your laurels and raking in the profits, while expecting us to continue voting for you as though it was a given. You didn't expect my scrutiny, but you ended up with my praise.

(P.S.: Do you think I'm still down with election fever?)
