Bing it on!

There's been a lot of buzz about Microsoft's new search engine Bing, and due to some nice features and impressive search results, I see some people questioning whether this will end up being a "Google killer".

Knowing Microsoft, when it enters a market like this, they will be aggressive and it will hurt the incumbents. Just look at the Microsoft Xbox. I think many were skeptical that Microsoft would make a big impact on the console market when it first entered it, but boy did the company do some serious damage to Sony. Just a couple of days ago at E3, Microsoft announced a new motion-sensing technology that would definitely impact Nintendo's leadership of the console market.

I personally think a threat to Google's dominance on search is inevitable and that Bing may just be that silver bullet. Let's not even talk about Yahoo! here. I think the problem with this threat to Google's dominance of search is that it may potentially shift the entire "balance of power" between Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo!.

But you know what? I think the folks at Google, who are not stupid, would have seen this coming all along. That one day they would lose their dominance of search, and if they lost it to Microsoft, they might be pretty screwed because of Microsoft's dominance of desktop OS and applications. I think that is why Google has been championing cloud computing and rolling out a whole basket of cloud-based apps. Besides cloud-based applications, there's the very important mobile platform, too, with Google Andriod. Hey, Google even started its own browser in the Chrome!

With the emergence of Bing, I would not be surprised if Google moves deeper and more aggresively into the cloud and into mobile since Microsoft has now stepped onto the search turf with vengence. Google knows that it will be near impossible to fight Microsoft's dominance on the desktop front.

As a consumer, all this can only mean good news as we now have more viable options for search and more good stuff being thrown our way as the giants battle it out. So I say, "Bing it on", the show's about to begin! Or how about, "Bing me up, Scotty"? (Sorry, I just had to!)
