Buying a phone without a charger?

This geek managed to join Nokia's Virtual Eco-Roundtable this week where we video-conferenced via HP Halo into Finland and got a pretty good idea of Nokia's green strategy, which includes their environmental programs in South East Asia Pacific (SEAP), environmental design, as well as packaging design.

While it was heartening to learn that Nokia's protecting a watershed in Philippines, saving wild elephants in South Thailand and turtles in Malaysia, two things from the Roundtable really caught this geek's attention.

Firstly, Nokia has a recycling program across 200+ locations in SEAP where you can recycle a phone of any brand and Nokia would plant a tree in your name. Now, what's so cool about that since tree planting programs are often criticised? Well, I thought Nokia's approach was quite neat because after they planted the tree, they'd send you the coordinates of the tree and you can look it up on Google Earth and it'd have your name on it. Periodically, they'd also send you photos of your tree and you can monitor its growth.

As Nokia was discussing about their green packaging strategy, this geek remembered how he once looked around his house and counted more than 10 Nokia chargers and wished that Nokia would sell phones with the chargers as an option. And hey what do you know? Nokia has started piloting a program in Europe where you can choose to buy the phone with or without the charger, saving on the packaging as well as on the chargers. Well, I hope the pilot turns out to be a successful one and rolls out globally cause I'm not looking forward to adding another Nokia charger to my collection anytime soon.

I think people who have more than one Nokia phone get annoyed with getting the same charger. If there's a realistic discount, i'm sure it would be popular for quiet few people.

I think 2-3 is still ok. But over time if you are always using the same brand like Nokia..

@Geekonimics: Yes, the issue with having too many spares is the problem for most people. I suppose they could go as gifts for special occasions. I suppose many people love a Nokia charger for a birthday gifts.

Nice picture, you look like a big CEO or director.
