"Internet down along the whole street"

This geek was sorely disappointed when he stepped back into his Hanoi hotel room yesterday to find the room's ADSL Internet connection down. After fiddling with the cables to make sure they were OK, I managed to access the hotel's router configurator from my room (don't ask me how).

Well, there wasn't much I could do in the configurator, but it did tell me that the Internet access problem wasn't just in my room, but affecting the whole hotel.

So I called up reception to inform them about it, and confidently, the reception spoke in good English: "So sorry for the inconvenience sir, the Internet is down along the whole street and we can only check for you again tomorrow."

Not bad, I was impressed that at least they knew about the problem and were working on it.

Thus, I had a sad night without the Internet. This morning, I woke up and checked--and the Internet was still down. Went to a nearby café two units down the SAME STREET to have breakfast and found that there was free Wi-Fi sponsored by Nokia. The Internet was up! What a lifesaver!

So much for "Internet down along the whole street".

But I decided to spare the hotel by not mentioning its name here :p

I received this comment on email and thought it interesting enough and should be shared here :

I used to live in Hanoi for two years and I’ve been experienced "Internet down along the whole street" so many times... Your last post was echoing a lot of my own repressed frustration ;) Thanks!

and a 2nd part :

yes, this problem is everywhere in Hanoi. Have you noticed the copper phone lines precariously hanging everywhere, from tree to pole, to roof… I suppose the problem comes from that – at least it would explain why the problem runs along streets.
