Who owns HTC?

This geek was surprised to learn this week that one of his customers actually owns HTC indirectly, so he went to do more research and here's the scoop. With all the consumer confusion over who owns Dopod and HTC--whether they are the same company, what happened to O2 Asia, etc., here's some stuff I discovered.

Coming to a year now, I've been doing some work for one of the Formosa group subsidiaries. And on this recent trip to Taiwan, I was surprised to learn a few quick facts about this customer who relates to HTC:

  • Boss of Formosa Wang Yung-ching is the richest man in Taiwan (according to Forbes) through plastics, rubber, and petro-chemical business.

  • His daugher Cher Wang is the richest woman in Taiwan (according to Forbes) and is also Chairwoman of HTC.

  • Cher Wang is also the largest shareholder in HTC with more than a 20 percent stake.

  • For a long time, HTC was an OEM manufacturer for popular brands we know like O2 and Dopod.

  • There've been market changes in the past one year with O2 Asia gone and HTC buying into Dopod.

  • Cher Wang now owns 90 percent of Dopod.

So effectively, HTC and Dopod are both owned by the richest man and woman in Taiwan!

OK with that info, this geek is off to Taiwan's largest IT show of the year!

Have a good weekend, folks!

(Still stuck in Taipei)
