Cross virtual world travel to become a reality?
Oct 12, 2007 10:52Kewl! My online alter-ego can do inter-virtual world travel in the possible near future! Second Life and IBM are going to make it happen!
The story just came out in Today today, right after a report appeared (a few days ago) that investments in various virtual worlds have exceeded US$1 billion, according to a research by Virtual Worlds Management (Linden Labs, the creators of Second Life, doesn't even seem to be on the list)!
Looks like Linden Labs want to tap other virtual worlds as well?
Hardly surprising with the emergence of new virtual worlds like China's Hipihi which seems to promise much more potential than Second Life which, although boasting registered users of more than 10 million, has only less than half a million active users as compared with, say, an MMORPG-like World of Warcraft which has more than 9 million active paying subscribers.
The potential for this business seems to be a lot more. The investors see it. World of Warcraft shows you the possible earnings, and Linden Labs is not taking chances by offering cross virtual world integration.
Maybe there will be a whole new industry created in inter-virtual world tourism? Well, with virtual worlds, one never really knows what to expect anymore!
