Come to Singapore in your Second Life!

Singapore is now on Second Life! Thanks to our Singapore Goverment who just bought a piece of virtual land!

Why in the world would the Singapore Government do that and how much did they pay?

Well, at the time of this posting, I think it's not yet revealed how much the Singapore Government paid for this exquisite piece of virtual real estate. But the main question ringing in our heads will probably be WHY?

While I can already hear the cynics a mile off, I actually think there are some good reasons for the Singapore Government to do this; although it's not very clear yet how the execution will turn out.

Here's why I think the Singapore Government did it:

1. Second Life boasts of a population double or more than the population of Singapore itself.
2. This can be a great way to attract tourists and highly mobile/connected "foreign talents" (very sensitive phrase) to Singapore.
3. Other MMOGs like World of Warcraft, although also boasting subscriber bases of more than 8 million, are not as ideal as Second Life for the Singapore Government in such an unique initiative.
4. Second Life is boring, nothing much to do, especially with the new ban on online gambling. Maybe for once an interesting Singapore island complete with Sentosa will actually become a dream virtual resort island for the 8 plus million population in Second Life!

Of course, the devil's always in the details, and it'd really depend on how well this whole project is executed. On last check, a friend of mine told me the island was still empty.

Hopefully, the Government will not take two to three years to bring something up on this island like most of our Singapore's construction projects (I'll leave that for another topic)!

Let me see, what are some "interesting" things you can usually do in Singapore?

1. Shopping
2. Go on a food binge?
3. Night Safari
4. Sentosa Resort Island
5. Eat durians!?

Of course, none of these things will really appeal to us geeks except maybe gadget shopping and great food!

Imagine if all these "attractions" came online in Second Life, like maybe you can have activities and play casual games around the theme of shopping and food. The possibilities should be quite exciting!?

Of course, if the Singapore Government was thinking of using Second Life as an extension of the Sentosa Integrated Resort for online gambling, that's gonna be one hell of a long story, not unlike that of its experience with Shin Corp!

Good post! btw, a fellow scribe quipped that maybe how they're paying for the virtual real estate is from the ERP monies - the real reason they're putting up more Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries and extending operating hours. Talk about pay and pay.

They are definitely hidding something up their sleeves, collars, socks..etc.

Might be gambling since the IR is coming very soon.
In a few years time, we shall see... :D

Hey editor! Thanks for visiting lah! Haha... actually, Singapore government has been selling 'virtual properties' out of the sky for the longest time known more commonly as 'HDBs'?

BTW after this post I actually found out that other countries are planning similar initiatives and Dentsu (biggest ad agency in Japan) actually bought the entire city of Tokyo in Second Life for almost a million dollars to create 'virtual Tokyo' where they plan to create shopping malls, banks, financial districts, etc!

Oh yeah, I wrote this post while half asleep - horrified at my own english when I came back so I edited the post slightly LOL

LOL booest, thanks for visiting! Well, if it's gambling they are aiming... it just got outlawed in Second Life! Tough..

Hey booest, I was just reading up on ODEX and you got mentioned in this post aelgtoer.blogspot.com... for the great work that you've been doing on behalf of the kids who have been ODEX-ed.

That's like watching fireworks. Taxpayers' money going up in flames. Tsk.

haha Damian... interesting analogy. But I actually do think this virtual investment has some potential ROIs. Let's wait and see bah

I'm receiving some flake from the Second Life community on my "Second Life is boring, nothing much to do" comment.

Well first of all welcome to my blog! Those of you who have jumped in from the SL community.

I do have some MMORPG background and still own a chain of cyber-cafes. As expected, I'm more in tuned with the MMORPG community who are so busy going around killing in WoW and exploring amazingly beautiful new worlds in Granado Espada that yes we really just can't figure out the buzz of Second Life! Not that I've not tried SL myself!

But I'm sorry if the "nothing much to do" comment offends you, it is my personal comment and definitely not reflective of CNET Asia. As for the 'boring' part, here are some other comments that may give a context to where I'm coming from

From an active Second Lifer who hosts activities in SL
tsdawn.blogspot.com...

Maybe I stand corrected here?
valleywag.com...

Boring Meetings in SL?
secondlife.reuters.com...

and you can just plain simply google a mix of terms like "SL" "boring" "Second Life"

Wired Magazine just ran a story about how corporates entering SL are making such a big mistake and also that there's really "isn't much to do" in SL.

You can check out the story here www.wired.com...

Would be interesting to see how Spore garment makes this work.

edvarcl says...
one thing to note is that both SL and HDB practices almost the same form of property regulations ;p

+++

HDB sells 99-year leases aka flats

SL sells monthly land use fees aka server space

+++

HDB largely lets you do whatever you want within the confines of your flat, except for things like gambling

SL largely lets you do whatever you want within the confines of your island, except for things like gambling

Geekonomics says...
@edvarcl - haha... nice to have you drop by visit my humble blog! Interesting comparisons... and within both SL and HDB, lotsa sex going on?!
