Of minimizing the awkward social "face" issue
Oct 14, 2009 08:35Recently, on one of my coffee-hunting trips along a deserted lane through Melbourne City, I had a rather peculiar debate with a friend who was furthering her studies here as well, and the question of the moment rose to a feverish note.
As we were both persisting in our former views, which was actually about the recent news of Facebook being a vicious "Venus flytrap" for parents who were engrossed in showing their children's prowess that they neglected to protect their children from the predatory actions of the likes of pedophiles and stalkers, our argument ventured into the red zone of verbally pondering aloud what we would have done if such social sites never appeared.
Of course, there was the dot.com sensation all those years back that perhaps broke a few pretty investment bubbles and ruined families even. But what it did was open our eyes to the potential of the Internet and cross-country/no-boundaries communication, as seen from the likes of all our blogs here combined. Posts from around the globe that bring the freshest news which can be thought up by man, served via a hotplate of data.

So, what can we do about the predatory means of such potential stalkers? I mean, think about this, if blogging and posting pictures are meant as a personal hobby and to keep up with friends in general, perhaps the most logical aspect would be not to include too much personal data about yourself and your loved ones.
But with the Net-savvy types in this time and age, even if you were not putting your data online but fashion yourself as a slow-mail, full paper-print type, it is still possible to leak unsavory information that you might not want circulating around. In any case, just chill and refrain from posting anyone else's pictures unless you are sure you (and your subject) are perfectly cool with that.
Perhaps you might want to start explaining to your pet cat why its pictures in a jester's hat and tutu were found in another man's hands...
