Tech Adventures from Down Under...

Of normadic lifestyles and changes

Recently, amidst the tedious transition between ordering a first-hand factory-second double-size mattress and organizing my new faster-than-lightning unlimited 8pm-8am broadband connection, I came to a realization. What would life be without any technology touching one's life?

Or rather, how much more difficult would it have to become?

Firstly, having to browse through the various mobile plans offered over in Australia, one frustrating problem popped up. Why aren't the likes of such bigwig mobile facilitators into the "trade-in" Asian phenomenon? I mean, we have great phones right about now, but how about trading in these great phones for even greater phones? Point be made is that it seems an awful waste to have a spare phone that is still technologically advanced for its one-year-odd lifespan, to be deteriorating in one's drawer.

The only good part about Australia in terms of mobile plans would be its rather attractive prepaid options, which I would perhaps stick to for a long time more. How many plans give you up to A$200 value for a mere A$50 charge? Definitely great for people who enjoy texting and surfing the Web, but for talkers, do note the rather pricey phone call bills that you may chalk up.

Secondly, without the local house phone which I had to constantly borrow from my boyfriend, I would not have been able to make calls back to Singapore (with a calling card that ran 4 cents-per-minute bills) or even arrange for the delivery of half my new room's decor.

Lastly, and the most important point of all, how could I blog or access the hottest gossip on Facebook and Twitter, pertaining to my friends back in Singapore without the Internet? Right about now, I am living with my brother. But without a connection to go "live" everyday, it seems almost frustrating at times. Although I have to say, it did compel me to visit long-lost friends from a time not too far in the past.

Oh, and the Internet here takes three to four business days to set up the phone, followed by another seven business days to set up the Internet. I'm still waiting. For now, I just have to travel to and fro around Internet cafes and friends' houses. We'll just have to wait and see how this rather nomadic lifestyle unfolds. I do so miss the days of cheap SMSes and the land where all phone calls cost below 60 cents per minute. That is you, Singapore, of course.

We're so used to having the internet around that we feel so disconnected with the world when it is unavailable. A sure sign of Internet Addiction maybe? Don't despair. This may be a great time to do some laundry chores, hehe.

@Scoobydoo: lols and what makes you think I have not already tried that? I've been gallivanting down the city streets searching for tasty coffee treats, but yea, I figured I have gotten Internet Poisoning somewhere along the lines. Same as my addiction to dark chocolate and violent MMORPG games.

Agree With Scoobydoo . I Was On A Trip Last Week . My Notebooke Had A Problem , So I Dont Take That . All This 1 Week I Just Feel Disconnected From All Of The World . Thinking About Places Without Accesing Internet , Is Enough To Mad Me .
When Came Back Of Trip , I Could Taka A Breath When Saw Internet Explorer Page !

@Sepanta: and it appears that such addictions run deeper. How bout your mobile? Have you tried going without it for 2 weeks? I did and seriously it was not fun for the first 3-4 days, although slowly I began to relax. Technology has made us such edgy creatures. Sad but true.

Many Of Peoples Cant ImagIng The World Without Phones , Mobile Phones , Internet , Satellite Tv & ...... If 1 Day Coming Even Without 1 Of These , Our Life Will Be Really Hard To Continue . And Finally 1 Hope : Is One Day Coming For Us Without High Addiction To These ? Just Hope !

May Your Invented System (EAA) , Be Useful For Us ! Good Idea .

@scoobydoo: well...the sad thing is my bf is not a Tech-nut. He actually still owns my old W910i Sony Ericsson and basically use it for everything and anything. So, Tech really is not for everyone.
@Sepanta: And, yea, the EAA should be an anonymous one, where addicts should meet up and exchange their Tech-plights one after the other.
