Tech Adventures from Down Under...

A-tripping, ready set go!

The countdown has started, and it is officially a week-and-a-half before I embark on my return to Melbourne. And then the packing routine starts.

Its pros and cons: What should go into a pitiful 25kg luggage bag and what is non-essential.

And while I was busy eliminating surpluses, I realized that there were plenty of gadgets I had accumulated over the years, missing from their regular places (regular, amidst my usual messiness). My Belkin mic+ Sony stereo mic for my iPod (MIA), the plugs to connect my Tascam for my D.I.Y. audio gear (tangled and hidden), my microSD card reader for my DS Lite (shattered into pieces), etc.

And then came the rebudgeting to buy all these "essentials". Yet, are these really necessary? I could NOT record, or use audio gear, or play my DS. In essence, all I will need would be the clothes on my back, a credit card that hopefully hasn't overreached its limits, and of course, food and lodging without reprise. Those would be my basic needs. And yet, when tech comes into the picture, the latest phones in town become the topic of the moment, as do the camera and newest Netbook... where does it stop?

On another note, I would be picking up on an unfinished task that I embarked on a long, long time ago, but never seemed to be able to comlete with any satisfactory ending. And that would be driving. I know, I know. People always say that women are not the best of drivers, with fear-stricken expressions marring their beautiful faces as they parallel park or turn odd corners... The point of the matter remains: I need my "P" plate in order to drive a car for travel purposes.

Right now, I am hunting for a good navigator unit, and Garmin pops to mind (though pricey and I am on a budget). Although with my iPhone 3G in hand and my old Nokia that can now load the latest Nokia 3.0 Maps and perhaps read locations aloud to me... perhaps the roads in Melbourne may not seem that perilous after all. Any takes on this?

About marielwong

Mariel Wong is a budding photo enthusiast who used to be the editor for the Singaporean version of T3 Magazine. That was before she embarked on a life-long journey of passion to seek out Kangaroos in the land Down-Under and attain certain life-goals, namely her Masters in Media and Communications, and fulfilling her dream to backpack around Oz. She is also an avid Facebook voyeur who enjoys maintaining long-distance relationships and meeting new friends, on a global-scale. She also compulsively updates mini-news of her every move via twitter, as well as blast out self-created melodies recorded through her now rather dowdy iPod Belkin recorder, located on her website.
