Tmax Window, a new PC OS is coming from Korea

Korea has world-leading IT manufacturers such as Samsung and LG. But on the software side, we all know that this is not as good as the hardware sector. That said, a local software company call Tmaxsoft has announced a new PC OS under development, which the firm will demonstrate on July 7. Tmaxsoft is known as Korea's No. 1 middleware among global companies like IBM, Oracle and BEA Systems. Tmaxsoft provides a full range of advanced enterprise system software to industry leaders across the world.

The company is saying that its Tmax Window will have software compatibility with Microsoft Windows. Tmaxcore will use 1,000 open Win32 APIs available by Microsoft to develop libraries to have compatibility with Windows. However, many local developers wonder what the other APIs are which MS did not ¡¯t release and feel that the time frame is too short to have full compatibility and patch bugs as well.

Tmaxsoft hasn't released any screenshot of its new OS and beta testing hasn't started yet, but it has said that the first demonstration will be on July 7.

Let's see how the company is going to show off its new PC OS called Tmax Window. If this really works well with the Microsoft Windows software, it will be a rock star! Tmaxsoft tells us that Tmax Window will be more secure than MS Windows and at a lower cost, too. Tmax Window will be out with its own Office software and Web browser, too.

Now, Korea is the only market that Apple and Microsoft haven't dominated with their products or software. For example, MS Office's market share is about 98 percent across the world, but not in Korea. We have our own Office software called Hangul Office, and it is selected as an official government software to be used in its network and by many of Koreans. Hangul Office has expanded its product line to a Web Office software called Thinkfree Office which is similar to Google Web Office.

The Internet Messenger is also my favorite. I know China has QQ for its Internet messenger, while we have one called NateOn. NateOn has more than 27 million users and it just keeps growing by 0.2 million users every month. NateOn is the No. 1 market share holder in the Korean Internet messenger market and MSN will have some ways to go to catch up.

Apple's favorite product, the iPod, is also not a market leader in Korea. We do have various local brands that compete with Apple. We have Cowon, iriver, Samsung, and many more.

It is good to know that we do have some leading software at least in Korea. Someday, these software will hopefully be exported overseas, just like our advanced IT technologies which are already in many other countries. WiBro can be a good example. It is exported as WiMAX overseas, with all the technology and hardware developed in Korea.

I, for one, am very excited to see a new PC OS call Tmax Window coming out in July, and hope it will meet our expectations. Are we going to have our own PC OS without MS Windows or Linux? Cool!

I'd be very surprised if Microsoft would allow a Windows-clone to get launched at all. They wouldn't even go for "Lindows" back in 2001 when Lindows was just a Linux clone. Tmaxsoft would have a hard time fighting off Microsoft if they named it "Tmax Windows", I reckon. I do hope Tmaxsoft would succeed though.

You are right on that naming issue. Let's see how Tmaxsoft will solve out with it. At the moment, Tmax Window seems project name I guess. If not, they should thought about MS anyway.

Governments, any, should develop a new OS regardless of so called patents. It's time to put a stop to American Bullying and Microsoft is just one instrument for doing this.

A low-priced and verstile OS seems like a good idea. I'm hoping it works out. The OS market is full of rubbish these days.
