Free AntiVirus software hits in Korea

Lately, Yahoo! Korea started to release a full version of AntiVirus through its new version Internet Explorer toolbar in Korea. Yes, this isn't the first time that we've seen free AntiVirus software these days. However, most of them do not contain high level of services like real-time protection including email protection and real-time updates on virus engines. Just basic features and anti-spyware but they are also not very stable and aren't really helpful for protecting your PC as well.

Actually, Korean portal Naver was trying to release a full version of AntiVirus service PC Green earlier but gave up on this because of other AntiVirus companies in Korea that sell it to the market. Too bad. If they succeed, this will make a big difference in the Korean AntiVirus market.

However, a company called ESTsoft released a new AntiVirus Alyac to customers a month ago free of charge. This AntiVirus contains virus/malware scan & cure (HiVE, Auto Update etc), real-time protection and system tune-up (Registry & HDD fix, controlling installed ActiveX etc). I tried it myself and found it had a nice user interface and shows good performance based on two famous virus engines Bitdefender and PC Ziggy.

I know B2C market in Korea isn't big compare to B2B but this will make some changes in AntiVirus market in Korea from 2008. Since Yahoo! Korea joined this wave from 24th Dec, this will push other portals to follow and get into this service. Otherwise, they will lose their visitors to other sites. Daum, Google Korea should consider this by now.

But, Yahoo included this to the Explorer toolbar which doesn't convenience most users. I don't like to install those toolbars on my PC. Well, I understand that that is the only way to promote their site and a way to release it with some profitable banners. However, ESTsoft approach is more convenient and easy for the customers. Just install it as a normal AntiVirus software and use it like that. It will be interesting to see those behind these portals' AntiVirus versions later on too. How they are going to differentiate their service from others.

What do you think? Is Yahoo! also going to launch this new service to international customers too? We'll see.

Generally, most PC manufacturers offer Norton AntiVirus with 60 days or 1-year trial when we buy a PC or laptop. But, this software is too resource intensive which causes slow boot times and performance on the PC. So, this is the first software that I delete or uninstall when I buy a new PC or laptop. However, this will put me in a difficult position to survive from viruses from the Internet or network--which prompts me to look for alternative AntiVirus.

Now, I don't have to worry about this anymore! I will be able to select a AntiVirus that I'd like to have from 2008 I guess. (I have 2 choices already, isn't it?)

Freeware is always good to see and we're happy to find it isn't it?

Hope all of you had a great Christmas holiday with your family!!!
