Brunei gets big, fat bandwidth cable

Two years is a long time in Internet terms, but that's how long ago we were promised a 20,000km submarine fiber-optic cable system to improve the country's bandwidth. The wait is now over.

It took some digging but I managed to pull out the original article on the proposed undersea cable link between Southeast Asia and the US. The latest reports say that the cable will be ready in August. I like how the report starts off by acknowledging YouTube as a reason we need more bandwidth. It's a sign of how Internet habits are changing.

Naturally, everyone's looking forward to this cable starting operation. I've previously mentioned Brunei's problematic bandwidth and this cable will go a long way to alleviating the problem.

Now, let's work on lowering the price for high-speed connections. Pretty please? :)

About Lim Sheng Ming

Tired of relatives misspelling his name, Lim Sheng Ming christened himself "LSM". Born in Brunei, he is currently based in intoxicating Japan where he is supposed to be doing research. A published writer, an accomplished Latin dancer, a Tai Chi practitioner and a committed Lifehacker, he still finds time to follow standards-based Web development and promote Internet accessibility. He is also one of the few who have switched from a Mac (but don't judge him for that).
