Ultimate Thailand Explorers: Vote for Filipino semifinalists Michael Paul and Jennifer

Attesting to how social media can be effectively tapped for the tourism industry, the Ultimate Thailand Explorers competition sees Internet-savvy travelers vying for the chance to explore five of the country's top holiday destinations: Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui.

Making it to the semifinals for Koh Samui are Filipino newlyweds Michael Paul and Jennifer of Zamboanga City, Philippines. You can vote for Michael Paul and Jennifer here after registering at the Ultimate Thailand Explorers site.

Interestingly enough, Jennifer is a blogger whom I featured way back in 2005 for INQ7.net's (now INQUIRER.net) YOU Blog Addicts section (unfortunately, the link to that old article is no longer working). So it was a pleasant surprise to hear from her and find out that she and her husband are taking part in this competition.

Each destination has five semifinalists, and the team that garners the most online votes will be the one to move on to the finals for the all-expenses paid trip to Thailand to explore their destination. As of this writing, Michael Paul and Jennifer are in third place for their destination, Koh Samui.

It's great to see how much technology has become a part of our daily lives, to the point that we can take it for granted these days that travelers will take photos and videos using their mobile phones or digicams, and share these on sites such as YouTube and Flickr. Take this from someone who started taking videos with my mobile phone (an N90 back then) to cover news events as a tech journalist back in 2006, and drew funny stares from people who weren't used to this kind of multimedia coverage. Times certainly have changed, and many of us have evolved into multimedia creatures.

Here's the YouTube clip of Michael Paul and Jennifer's video.

You can vote for one team per destination once every 24 hours. By the way, by voting, you're not only helping your favorite team, but you'll also get the chance to win prizes yourself.

Here's an excerpt from the press statement on the site explaining how the teams will compete.

Each day the teams of competitors must visit the many fantastic attractions and activities at their chosen destinations and then share their experiences with the online community by uploading videos, photos, and stories on various websites including, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs.

If you'd like to find out more about Michael Paul and Jennifer, you may visit their blog or become a fan of their page on Facebook.

As a Filipino, I'm all for rooting for my countrymen Michael Paul and Jennifer. The voting period is from October 19 to November 12. Best of luck, Jennifer and Michael Paul.
