Of yellow Twibbons for Cory Aquino, online tributes and multimedia journalism

Check out this QTV report on how the online community paid tribute to former Philippine President Corazon "Cory" Aquino, whose death on August 1 sent the Filipino nation into mourning, with between 100,000 and 300,000 people lining the streets during her funeral.

The video report includes a feature on the Yellow Ribbon for Pres. Cory Twibbon that Ederic Eder created, and which thousands of Filipinos on Twitter used for their avatars. As of this writing, 17,769 supporters have used the Twibbon.

Here's the video clip.

The role that social networks and New Media played in the coverage of the Aquino wake and funeral is a testament to sweeping changes in the way ordinary people are consuming, and, more importantly, producing content.

Kudos to all the journalists and citizen journalists who provided online coverage of this important event in Philippine history, and may this serve to wake up all the skeptics who doubted the power of multimedia journalism for the past few years, just as Filipinos proved wrong those who kept saying that People Power is dead.

As I've said years ago, at the end of the day, it's multimedia... or dead media.
