Microsoft-Yahoo! deal: End of an era as Microsoft Bing powers Yahoo! Search
Jul 30, 2009 09:53It was a long time coming, but Microsoft and Yahoo! have finally signed a deal, which now sees us bidding goodbye to Yahoo! Search as we know it.
Under the 10-year deal, Microsoft and Yahoo! will unify their search and advertising efforts. Yahoo! is in effect letting Microsoft take care of the search business, as Microsoft Bing will now be the one to power Yahoo! Search. Kind of makes long-time Internet users wax nostalgic, but then again once upon a time Google was the search engine that powered Yahoo! Search before it became the online giant we now know.
Meanwhile, Microsoft will now rely on Yahoo! to take care of their combined advertising business.
Here's an excerpt from the Washington Post story.
"In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search, while Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies' premium search advertisers," a press release declared.
Few Web users are likely to miss Microsoft's contribution to Web searching, but most people have fed a query to Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo at some point. Replacing Yahoo's search engine with Microsoft's Bing would delete one of the oldest landmarks in the Web landscape.
What do you think of the partnership? It does make sense for each company to focus on what they do better than the other, and I guess Bing has a brighter future in search.
But will this partnership be enough to threaten Google?
Here's a video from UPI.com with reactions from consumers to the Microsoft-Yahoo! deal and whether they would continue using Google or switch to Bing.
And here's a Forbes video where Greg Vogel, principal of GKV Capital, weighs in on the "MicroHoo" deal.

Yahoo is stuck with Bing for the next ten years. Ballmer will get tired of Bing within five years.
At that point, Yahoo will be YaScrewed.

Likely we won't really see the deal play out till 2-3 years later though. They'll need at least 24 months + clear anti-trust? That'll be a long time. Here's my take on MicroHoo: asia.cnet.com...

hi geek, yup, still a lot of hurdles for them. great insights in your blog post. it will be interesting to see how this will play out, and we'll all keep wondering what would have happened if yahoo! had accepted microsoft's original offer to buy its search business.
