Mattel has unveiled Barbie Girls, MP3 players designed to look like dolls that also hook into an online virtual community for girls. The device, which is about 114mm tall, is set to come out in July in the US and sell for about US$60.
The device has 512MB of memory and an expandable miniSD slot for up to a 2GB memory card.

Mattel is touting BarbieGirls.com as the first global virtual world designed specifically for girls. According to Mattel, girls can create virtual characters by picking "from 2.64 quadrillion character combinations of fashions and accessories, as well as stylish faces, expressions and hairstyles".
