BARCELONA-- Though it's not new, augmented reality hasn't really taken off yet. That's a surprising thing in our books, considering how useful it is. With a handset's built-in camera, GPS and Internet connection, an augmented reality app can overlay information on a physical object simply by pointing the mobile towards it.
Comverse, an application developer which makes programs for telco operators has come up with a new twist. This time, the object is a person. This allows the user to not only send tweets or email messages, but also tag the person's photos on Facebook as well.
The backend operation is actually handled by face.com which does autotagging for images on Facebook. Comverse's application requires the operator to link the picture from the handset to the face.com service, hence it will not be available as a downloadable app. At this time, only iPhone is compatible with this service, though no telco has announced it will provide the service at this time. You can check out a demo in the video below.
About the author
Tracking laptop and PC trends since 2005, Darius Chang may have been knee deep in bits and bytes but is certainly not a binary person. Under that big and soft exterior holds a marshmallow core which dotes on his god-daughters and nephew. Suspected of ADD, his interests span disparate fields such as sustainability studies, diving, sports, politics, etc. A true jack of all trades, but master of one (maybe two).
