The high-dynamic range (HDR) mode is typically found on more advanced shooters such as interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs) and dSLRs. It is an image-processing technique that properly exposes both low-light and bright portions of a picture.
Therefore, it is best used for scenes with high contrast, such as a backlit subject against harsh sunlight. The key is to have both highlights and shadows sharing an almost equal space in the frame, so that your camera will be able to capture all the details in both areas.
