Is it possible to upgrade the OS on Android tablets?

Vincent Chang

Although OS updates on tablets are usually introduced by manufacturers, it's possible for end-users to do so manually. Generally, the first step involves getting root access to the device. Then, you may need to search for a custom ROM for your tablet. Your tablet hardware will determine if it can be upgraded. There are online tutorials that describe in detail how to do so.

However, there are a few issues that you should note before proceeding. First, vendors are unlikely to honor product warranties if they find that the tablet OS has been modified. Also, older hardware may not be able to run the newer OS properly, which is a reason why vendors chose not to update the OS.

Finally, your user data and any downloaded apps could be erased in the process so we highly recommend that you save your data.
