Alcatel offers Yahoo-powered One Touch Net mobile handset

Google has the Nexus One, Apple has the iPhone.

The Alcatel handset, manufactured by TCT Mobile, targets emerging markets with a product that looks and acts like a smartphone, but at a fraction of the price. According to Irv Henderson, vice president, Product Development, Yahoo! Mobile and Local, the mobile will retail for under US$100.

With a single sign-in, the One Touch Net mobile can receive push-email from Yahoo servers as well as sync contact and calendar information. The platform also works with popular social-networking sites (Yahoo! Social Pulse) such as Facebook to notify users about status updates. You can also upload photoshots using the built-in camera to Flickr instantly. Another interesting feature is the Yahoo! Search with Voice feature that allows search strings to be spoken instead of typed.

Alcatel One Touch Net mobile
  • 2.4-inch display
  • QWERTY keyboard with optical trackpad
  • EDGE mobile Internet connectivity
  • Bluetooth stereo
  • 2-megapixel camera
  • 80MB storage
  • FM radio

  • What if you're on Gmail or other email services? Fortunately, the handset supports POP and IMAP standards so you can still retrieve messages from your current provider, though it will not be pushed to your handset or synced with contact or calendar data. The Alcatel One Touch Net mobile will retail in India from July, with plans to enter Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam at a later date.
