Mobile advertising company AdMob has released data showing the number of iPhone OS (now called iOS) devices requesting an ad from it, broken down by country. While this isn't an exact count of the number of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices in each country, it does give an idea of the penetration because many free applications are ad-supported through AdMob and would thus access the company's network. According to the data, the country that loves the iPhone most is Singapore.
The study says there are about 480,000 iOS devices in the city-state that accessed the AdMob network in April 2010, of which about 400,000 are iPhones. The population of Singapore, according to the CIA factsheet, is about 4.7 million. This means a staggering 10 percent penetration rate for iOS and about 8.5 percent for the iPhone alone.
Naturally, the US has the highest number of iOS devices, totaling over 18 million, according to AdMob's numbers. The country has a population of about 300 million, which gives it a penetration rate of about 6 percent, still far lower than Singapore's.
So, if you live in the Lion City and seem to see iPhones everywhere you go, don't worry, you're not seeing things. It's really everywhere.
